The Intrigue Of Lighthouses

By: Sarah Farmer Blevins

A lighthouse is an enchanting and unique structure, standing tall along the coast. With its slender tower piercing the sky, it emits light to guide ships and boats at sea, helping them safely navigate through treacherous waters. They’re very intriguing with their distinctive architecture, which makes them stand out from other buildings. Lighthouses are symbolized as beacons of hope and safety, which makes them a common theme in literature, art, and popular culture.

There are currently about 18,600 lighthouses in the world, and many are still in operation today. A lot of them have been converted into hotels and museums. Staying the night in a lighthouse is definitely on my bucket list. I think they’re truly magical, and you may want to consider visiting one for your next outing. Let’s explore some of the great reasons why they make a great place to visit.

Lighthouses can make for a wonderful getaway destination, with their secluded locations, charming interiors, and breathtaking views of the ocean. They provide stunning views of the surrounding landscape, and the perfect spot to watch a gorgeous sunset. Sounds like a very romantic place to spend some time with your partner. Imagine climbing to the top, and taking in the jaw-dropping scenery together. You may be able to spot some wildlife, such as birds, whales, and seals, which would make for an unforgettable experience.

A lot of lighthouses are located in scenic areas with hiking trails or walking paths. You can take a leisurely stroll, while enjoying the magnificent sight of the coast. There might even be a good fishing spot nearby, if you want to try your luck at catching some local fish. Being in a tranquil area with such great views, it’s also the perfect location to set up a nice picnic. Spread out a blanket, kick back, and indulge in a delicious meal while soaking up the amazing scenery. It’s hard to think of anything more peaceful than that.

Lighthouses hold great cultural significance and captivate the imagination. A lot of them offer guided tours, where you can learn all about the rich culture and fascinating history of the lighthouse and the surrounding area. There will likely be exhibits or displays, which will provide info about the history of navigation, shipwrecks, and other aspects of maritime history. Some lighthouses have museums that showcase artifacts, photographs, and other historical items. This will make for a very awe-inspiring, and memorable experience at such a fascinating place.

Whether you're seeking solitude, adventure, or relaxation, a lighthouse getaway is an excellent choice for all kinds of travelers.
