The Star System:
For the locations that make the cut on our website, we assign them one to three stars depending on how isolated and uncrowded they are. One star is by no means a bad rating, though. Any location we cover is a good destination and not drowned out by heavy tourism.
How isolated is the location? This is one criteria that we pay the most attention to. We love the feeling of being hidden away. Locations approach a three-star rating if, for example, they are far from crowds and chaos – away from dense cityscapes and perhaps way out among natural landscapes. For instance, certain places may only be accessible by boat. Boats can be expensive, but we wouldn’t list a destination if we didn’t think it was appealing enough for the cost to reach it. Many more of our destinations don’t cost a thing once you are near.
How crowded is it? This is naturally another important criteria for us – places where there are “not many people”. Being uncrowded is the norm for these locations. A far way beach, mountaintop, or anywhere that rarely sees more than a couple people at a time will land a three-star rating. Sometimes, you may even find a wide open area all to yourself. Even for one-star locations, there won’t be too many people to ever crowd out your experience.
