Drive In Movie Theaters

Written By: Sarah Farmer Blevins

With the popularity of drive-in movie theaters declining in recent decades, there aren’t too many left in operation. The United States has the most drive-ins, with a little over 300 still up and running- but their peak year was in 1958, with over 4,000 in operation. There are still some speckled throughout other parts of the world as well, with Australia and Canada also having a significant amount. Let’s talk about why going to a drive-in movie is superior to going to a regular movie theater.

The main draw for me is… you guessed it- more privacy. Going to a movie theater is always hit or miss. Sometimes you might have the theater all to yourself, but more times than not, you’re surrounded from every angle by noisy people and the distracting lights from their phones. Popcorn and drinks spilling down the aisles, people coughing behind you, or making commotion by getting up to use the restroom. That can be pretty nerve-wracking. You won’t have any of that at a drive-in. Kicking back and watching a good flick from the comfort of your own car sounds a lot more enjoyable. You can go solo, with friends or family, or you can even have the pleasure of cuddling with your partner- which you wouldn’t have a lot of room to do in a movie theater. If you have children, they’ll have more space to stretch out, and you won’t have to worry about keeping them silent for the whole movie. The only other people around will be in their own cars, where they won’t disturb you.

Another good thing about going to a drive-in, is that you can adjust your comfort level. Movie theaters are oftentimes too loud, or just downright chilly. From your car, you can control the volume and temperature, or even recline back if you so please. If your vehicle has the option, you can enjoy the warmth of a heated seat. Better yet, you can just pile a bunch of pillows in the bed of your truck, or the back of your SUV. Bring as many blankets as you desire. You can make it as cozy as you like, and you’ll have the ability to get into a comfortable position- unlike if you’re sitting in a chair for the entire movie.

In addition to privacy and comfort, is the benefit of a lower cost. Drive-ins are usually cheaper than paying the price of a movie ticket. You can even bring your own snacks, which sure beats paying for over-priced candy and drinks. There’s also a concession stand available, if you want that deliciously buttered popcorn- but if you want to pack a full course meal, there won’t be anyone to stop you. Bring a whole pizza, a good sandwich, or your favorite candy. Fill up the cooler so you’ll have ice cold drinks. The possibilities are endless. You really can’t go wrong.

There’s something truly special about watching a movie on the big screen, under the stars, out in the open air. It’s a unique and nostalgic experience that you won’t find at a movie theater. I have many fond childhood memories of summer nights at the drive-in with my family, and precious recent memories with my own children. I highly recommend this experience for anyone who wants to kick back, and enjoy a good movie without the disruptions of other people.
