Communication Problems When Traveling Abroad

By: Sarah Farmer Blevins

If you’re planning on traveling out of the country, or even just out of the time zone- you’re likely to encounter some issues with communication. Whether it’s technological issues or language barriers- let’s go over some of the different problems you might experience when traveling abroad, and some solutions for how to solve them so that you’ll feel more confident and prepared going into your trip.

One of the most challenging issues you’ll face when traveling abroad is the language barrier. It can be tough communicating with locals, or trying to understand signs and menus when you aren’t familiar with the language. It will help you out a lot just to learn some basic phrases, and taking a little bit of time out of each day to practice them before your trip. Translation apps and phrasebooks are good tools that you can use, and will definitely come in handy when you aren’t sure how to communicate something. When all else fails, showing pictures or using hand gestures is something that everyone can understand.

Another thing that can lead to misunderstandings or confusion are cultural differences- especially when it comes to social norms and customs. Researching the culture of the destination beforehand can help you be better prepared. Going in with an open mind, and showing respect and understanding for different beliefs, languages, and practices will get you a long way. You can learn a lot just by observing the locals to help you better understand their culture and way of life.

You will likely face some technology issues- such as spotty internet or phone service, which can make it hard communicating with others or trying to navigate in a foreign country. Downloading offline maps or apps ahead of time can be helpful, as well as carrying a portable charger for your electronic devices. Carrying a guide book or physical map can also be a good backup to have.

Using unfamiliar currency and payment methods can also cause some confusion and frustration- especially when dealing with foreign exchange rates. You’ll want to familiarize yourself with the currency and payment methods of your destination ahead of time, so you’ll be prepared. Carrying a currency converter or calculator will definitely be of help. You also might want to notify the banks and credit card companies of your travel plans, so that you can be sure to avoid any issues when making transactions.

Lastly, time differences are another thing that can make things difficult when traveling. Communicating with someone in a different time zone, as well as trying to adjust to the jet lag can be a challenge. Just plan ahead for those time differences. Schedule calls or meetings for appropriate hours. Sticking to a regular sleep schedule and avoiding taking naps during the day will be beneficial, and help you be able to adjust to the local time as quickly as possible.

The main takeaway here is that preparing in advance, and being adaptable to change will make things a breeze for you, and help you avoid issues with communication when you’re planning to travel abroad. Just planning ahead and having a little patience will help you so much in communicating effectively. Once you have that in order, it will be smooth sailing from here on out!
